Kinja'd!!!

A GTR with horrid plastic dip and an automatic(booo) Supra with wheels that are too small for it. Also, Spoiler? Why? I like Supra with either the stock spoiler or no spoiler at all. Got a pic of the Supra but not the GTR.

I think that's actually decent looking, the wing is a little much, but it could be far worse, atleast its a supra on the streets, and Auto or not, its a supra.

You still see better cars than I do. I once saw what seemed to be a C63 AMG station wagon (judging by badges) but turned out to be a regular C-class (Sport trim front clip and manual gearbox). And of course a couple of stanced turds.

Get your car lower with this one weird trick! small wheels......

Uhg...

Why so much down-force, don't those little wheels keep you close to the ground.

Yeah but you have to go MT with a sports car especially since 90s autos kind of sucked. Plus the wheels aren't bad but they do make the car look like a toy.

There are at least 3 C63 AMGs here. We do have some stances here, but none that I have seen.

NO NO NO. That wing entirely fucks the entire car. And so do the stupid fast and the furious stickers, but NOT THE WING. Take the stupid wing off, then the stupid stickers, and fit a more subtle exhaust tip, and the car would be beautiful.

Oh wow I didn't even notice the stickers... I don't understand why people put that there. If I do that to my car, please take a hammer to it.

16' was stock, so wheels aren't the problem. its the drop in connection with the wheels.

96 was one year when only automatic turbo Supras were offered for emissions reasons.

Those wheels are NOT too small, they are just right. Functional.

Well it doesn't help that he has a body kit. Plus bigger wheel are functional. They provide a bigger contact patch, so that mean more grip!

Wider* wheels provide a larger contact patch. Smaller diameter wheels means lower without compromising suspension geometry and more torque (with reduced top speed). With those sporty looking tires, I would way that they work well with the spoiler for functionality. That's a well-designed GT-style wing that would actually give good downforce.

No, it is also taller wheels. Basically because they are taller there is a larger circumference (and because when wheels hit the ground the flatten out a bit). That is why when tires are harder they provide less grip than when they are softer. Same thing with air pressure. . . atleast that is what I was told by a source I cannot find at this time. But if you think about, in group 5 they were restricted to 15 inch wide wheels, so to add more grip they gave the car huge 19s in the rear.

But yeah the spoiler, completely useless unless you are racing. SO if you have a spoiler you need a diffuser and a splitter as well.

No, the harder vs softer thing is due to "interlocking" (every vehicle dynamics book has a different name for it) between the rubber and the tarmac, where the softer it is, the more interlocking there is, giving more grip. This is why cars can get more than 1G of acceleration (after accounting for downforce).

Length of contact patch is largely dependent on weight on the tire, stiffness of the carcass and inflation pressure, with only a tiny effect due to diameter of the wheel. Higher diameter wheels are ONLY chosen to balance tire temperatures or clear brakes. Every vehicle dynamics or race car design book written since the 70s agrees on this.

And the spoiler is not useless if you aren't racing. It supplies rear downforce and that's all it does. Perhaps he noticed he gets more oversteer on his favorite high-speed sweeper than his favorite low-speed sweeper, meaning his aero balance was to the front, so he fixed it. Unlikely, but possible. And you never need a diffusor, especially as they do next to nothing until you get a flat underbody. They are more efficient when you do have one, though.

We appear to be at a stalemate. . . although I am pretty sure you are more correct then me. I SHALL NEVER ADMIT DEFEAT! Although, you do seem to know quite a lot. Like softer vs harder tires. I thought the rubber was soft. LOLOLOLOL

But seriously, I can swear I read somewhere that larger diameter wheels create a bigger contact patch. I do know that with bigger brakes you need bigger tires, but grip is also increased. Also race car books? Interesting, care to give suggestions? I need reading material.

But then I guess this is more a styling choice bigger wheels, but wider wheels aren't(which also help for styling reasons). Although I am not a big wheel sort of guy, 18 and 19 inches are more than enough for 99% of cars. 19 may also be pushing it.

Also if you have ever seen this man drive, it is only for show. The car never goes over 50.

Actually yes, the rubber is soft, which is what allows more interlocking. And fair enough on the show part, I believe it.

As to reading, I would recommend the following books in the following order:

1) How to Make Your Car Handle - Fred Puhn

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

2) Tune to Win - Carroll Smith

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

3) Race Car Vehicle Dynamics - Milliken & Milliken

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

That will step you up slowly from laymanship (dunno if that's a word) into expertitude (I guess one is, huh). Though the third requires at least a passing grasp of multivariable calculus.

I know multivariable calc would come in handy! I am taking that this semester actually. I wouldn't call me a layman, I am inbetween expert and amateur. Thanks for the books! I need something to read.
